                 DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE

The Department of Computer Science, State University of New York
at Buffalo, invites applications for positions of Assistant Professor
beginning September, 1985. Outstanding applicants for more senior
positions will also be considered. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in
Computer Science (or in a related field with Computer Science
experience) and superior research ability. The department welcomes
specialists in all areas of Computer Science, but especially in
programming languages, operating systems, computer architecture, and
software engineering. Potential colleagues for our faculty in
artificial intelligence, theory of computation, and program semantics
are also particularly welcome.

The department is small, but growing, with the support of the
University administration to increase its faculty and computing
equipment. Offering the B.A., B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees, the
department has limited, extremely selective, undergraduate enrollment
and high quality graduate students. The departmental computing
facility includes: a VAX 11/780 and two VAX 11/750s, each running
UNIX(TM), connected via Ethernet and attached to CSNET and USENET;
Grinnell, Itek and Adage image processing systems; a Laser printer;
additional line, character, and graphics printers; and over 40 video
terminals, some supporting color graphics. The department's computers
are attached, by a local area network, to the University's computers,
including a CDC Cyber 170/730 main frame and several VAX 11/780s and
750s, along with over 200 terminals available to faculty and students
for research and instructional uses. In addition, the University has
several microcomputer laboratories the department uses for
introductory courses.

SUNY/Buffalo is the largest, most comprehensive, research
university center of the 64-campus SUNY system, with approximately
26,000 students studying in 93 undergraduate, 101 master's, and 94
doctoral programs. The department has recently moved to the new $650
million North Campus located in suburban Amherst.

Despite its reputation, Buffalo's weather is tempered, both
summer and winter, by its location on Lake Erie and the Niagara River.
It has a first-class philharmonic orchestra, a vibrant theater
district, one of North America's noted modern art galleries, major-
league sports, and nearby state parks, water sports, and skiing. The
University is a short drive from Niagara Falls, one of the scenic
wonders of the world.

Send applications, including the names and addresses of four
references to: Prof. Stuart C. Shapiro, Chairman, Department of
Computer Science, SUNY at Buffalo, 226 Bell Hall, Buffalo, NY 14260
SUNY is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer.
