I've built elm 2.3 (patch level 7) and it works fine for me on our Suns. I am a 'vi' user (I know....I know....), and so elm and I are happy. When other people here (who all use 'emacs') attempt to use elm with 'emacs' (GNU Emacs 18.53.3) set as their editor they get the "Invoking editor..." message, and then nothing. ^C doesn't work. If you ^Z then you can suspend and then kill %1 the elm session. Am I missing something obvious here? Emacs IS in the searchpath. It also makes no difference whether you specify emacs with an absolute pathname.
