[Here is some documentation to go with the rogue clone just
posted. Included is a man page of sorts, and the Berkeley
"Guide to the Dungeons of Doom" document in a
formatted version for non-BSD sites. (The Berkeley
man page has a copyright notice in it, but interestingly
enough the Guide doesn't.) The formatted version has some
control characters in it, so don't be alarmed by the message
you get when unpacking that says nnnn control characters
	 may be missing. -br]

X.SH DESCRIPTION
X.PP
XThis game is a clone of the rogue 5.3 game that is part of the Berkeley
XSoftware Distribution (BSD) Tape.
X.PP
XThe command characters are precisely the same as in standard rogue 5.3.
Xh,j,k,l,y,u,b,n move you one step. Capitalize it, and you move until you
Xrun into something. Use the control key instead, and you move until you
Xare next to something.
X.PP
XWhenever the program asks you for an inventory letter, you can type '*' to
Xget a list of the logical choices. Sometimes, however, you don't want to
Xsee that list, but instead you want to see the list of your scrolls, potions,
Xweapons, or whatever. In these cases you can type one of ?!=:/)] to see
Xa menu of your scrolls, potions, rings, foods, wands, weapons or armor
Xrespectively. This is especially usefull when you know you want to drop
Xa particular item, a scroll for example, but you don't want to pick it
Xfrom the entire list, just from your collection of scrolls.
X.PP
XWhen you type control-a, you are shown a line that looks like:
X.sp
X.in +1.0i
XR-Hp: 6.50, E-Hp: 7.00 (!: 2, V: 0)
X.in -1.0i
X.sp
XThis line refers to Hp-raise averages. Each time your experience level
Xgoes up, your Hp is increased by a random amount not to exceed 10. If
Xyou are curious about your luck in these raises, you can use the ^A
Xcommand. In the example above R-Hp stands for "real Hp" which is
Xexactly your average Hp raise during the game. E-Hp stands for effective
XHp, and is the same as R-Hp except Hp raises from potions, and Hp-subtractions
Xfrom vampires are factored in. In the above between the parentheses, it
Xshows that 2 Hp points were given as a result of quaffing potions of
Xhealing, and that vampires have taken way none. All of these Hp numbers
Xrefer to you max Hp number; the rightmost number in Hp: (15)22 in the
Xstatus line at the bottom of your rogue screen.
X.PP
XThe 'X' command silently creates a file in your current directory called
Xrogue.screen. This file contains a copy of your screen at the time you
Xtyped typed the 'X' This works at absolutely any point in the program.
XIt is useful for showing other folks what kind of a mess you got into,
Xor what a great game you were having. This functionality means that
Xyou cannot use the letter 'X' when 'calling' an object something.
X.PP
XThe
X.B
X-s
X.R
Xoption prints the score file and exits.

X
X You have just finished your years as a student at the
X local fighter's guild. After much practice and sweat you
X have finally completed your training and are ready to embark
X upon a perilous adventure. As a test of your skills, the
X local guildmasters have sent you into the Dungeons of Doom.
X Your task is to return with the Amulet of Yendor. Your
X reward for the completion of this task will be a full
X membership in the local guild. In addition, you are allowed
X to keep all the loot you bring back from the dungeons.
X
X In preparation for your journey, you are given an
X enchanted mace, a bow, and a quiver of arrows taken from a
X dragon's hoard in the far off Dark Mountains. You are also
X outfitted with elf-crafted armor and given enough food to
X reach the dungeons. You say goodbye to family and friends
X for what may be the last time and head up the road.
X
X You set out on your way to the dungeons and after
X several days of uneventful travel, you see the ancient ruins
X that mark the entrance to the Dungeons of Doom. It is late
X at night, so you make camp at the entrance and spend the
X night sleeping under the open skies. In the morning you
X gather your weapons, put on your armor, eat what is almost
X your last food, and enter the dungeons.

X
X You have just begun a game of rogue. Your goal is to
X grab as much treasure as you can, find the Amulet of Yendor,
X and get out of the Dungeons of Doom alive. On the screen, a
X map of where you have been and what you have seen on the
X current dungeon level is kept. As you explore more of the
X level, it appears on the screen in front of you.
X
X Rogue differs from most computer fantasy games in that
X it is screen oriented. Commands are all one or two keys-
X trokes[1] and the results of your commands are displayed
X graphically on the screen rather than being explained in
X words.[2]
X
X Another major difference between rogue and other com-
X puter fantasy games is that once you have solved all the
X puzzles in a standard fantasy game, it has lost most of its
X excitement and it ceases to be fun. Rogue, on the other

X
X In order to understand what is going on in rogue you
X have to first get some grasp of what rogue is doing with the
X screen. The rogue screen is intended to replace the "You
X can see ..." descriptions of standard fantasy games. Figure
X 1 is a sample of what a rogue screen might look like.
X
X _3._1. _T_h_e _b_o_t_t_o_m _l_i_n_e
X
X At the bottom line of the screen are a few pieces of
X cryptic information describing your current status. Here is
X an explanation of what these things mean:
X
X Level This number indicates how deep you have gone in the
X dungeon. It starts at one and goes up as you go
X deeper into the dungeon.
X
X Gold The number of gold pieces you have managed to find
X and keep with you so far.
X
X Hp Your current and maximum health points. Health
X points indicate how much damage you can take before
X you die. The more you get hit in a fight, the lower
X they get. You can regain health points by resting.
X The number in parentheses is the maximum number your
X health points can reach.

X
X
X Str Your current strength and maximum ever strength.
X This can be any integer less than or equal to 31, or
X greater than or equal to three. The higher the
X number, the stronger you are. The number in the
X parentheses is the maximum strength you have attained
X so far this game.
X
X Arm Your current armor protection. This number indicates
X how effective your armor is in stopping blows from
X unfriendly creatures. The higher this number is, the
X more effective the armor.
X
X Exp These two numbers give your current experience level
X and experience points. As you do things, you gain
X experience points. At certain experience point
X totals, you gain an experience level. The more
X experienced you are, the better you are able to fight
X and to withstand magical attacks.
X
X _3._2. _T_h_e _t_o_p _l_i_n_e

X The top line of the screen is reserved for printing
X messages that describe things that are impossible to
X represent visually. If you see a "--More--" on the top
X line, this means that rogue wants to print another message
X on the screen, but it wants to make certain that you have
X read the one that is there first. To read the next message,
X just type a space.
X
X _3._3. _T_h_e _r_e_s_t _o_f _t_h_e _s_c_r_e_e_n
X
X The rest of the screen is the map of the level as you
X have explored it so far. Each symbol on the screen
X represents something. Here is a list of what the various
X symbols mean:
X
X @ This symbol represents you, the adventurer.
X
X -| These symbols represent the walls of rooms.
X
X + A door to/from a room.
X
X . The floor of a room.
X
X # The floor of a passage between rooms.
X
X * A pile or pot of gold.

X ! A flask containing a magic potion.
X
X ? A piece of paper, usually a magic scroll.
X
X          =    A ring with magic properties
X
X / A magical staff or wand
X
X ^ A trap, watch out for these.
X
X % A staircase to other levels
X
X : A piece of food.
X
X A-Z The uppercase letters represent the various inhabitants
X of the Dungeons of Doom. Watch out, they can be nasty
X and vicious.
X
X _4. _C_o_m_m_a_n_d_s
X
X Commands are given to rogue by typing one or two char-
X acters. Most commands can be preceded by a count to repeat
X them (e.g. typing "10s" will do ten searches). Commands for
X which counts make no sense have the count ignored. To can-
X cel a count or a prefix, type <ESCAPE>. The list of com-
X mands is rather long, but it can be read at any time during
X the game with the "?" command. Here it is for reference,
X with a short explanation of each command.
X
X ? The help command. Asks for a character to give help
X on. If you type a "*", it will list all the commands,
X otherwise it will explain what the character you typed
X does.
X
X / This is the "What is that on the screen?" command. A
X "/" followed by any character that you see on the
X level, will tell you what that character is. For
X instance, typing "/@" will tell you that the "@" symbol
X represents you, the player.
X
X h, H, ^H
X Move left. You move one space to the left. If you use
X upper case "h", you will continue to move left until
X you run into something. This works for all movement
X commands (e.g. "L" means run in direction "l") If you
X use the "control" "h", you will continue moving in the
X specified direction until you pass something interest-
X ing or run into a wall. You should experiment with
X this, since it is a very useful command, but very dif-
X ficult to describe. This also works for all movement
X commands.

X When you find something in the dungeon, it is common to
X want to pick the object up. This is accomplished in rogue
X by walking over the object (unless you use the "m" prefix,
X see above). If you are carrying too many things, the pro-
X gram will tell you and it won't pick up the object, other-
X wise it will add it to your pack and tell you what you just
X picked up.
X
X Many of the commands that operate on objects must
X prompt you to find out which object you want to use. If you
X change your mind and don't want to do that command after
X all, just type an <ESCAPE> and the command will be aborted.
X
X Some objects, like armor and weapons, are easily dif-
X ferentiated. Others, like scrolls and potions, are given
X labels which vary according to type. During a game, any two
X of the same kind of object with the same label are the same
X type. However, the labels will vary from game to game.
X
X When you use one of these labeled objects, if its
X effect is obvious, rogue will remember what it is for you.
X If it's effect isn't extremely obvious you will be asked
X what you want to scribble on it so you will recognize it
X later, or you can use the "call" command (see above).

X places the cursor by the value of the first option and waits
X for you to type. You can type a <RETURN> which means to go
X to the next option, a "-" which means to go to the previous
X option, an <ESCAPE> which means to return to the game, or
X you can give the option a value. For boolean options this

X on slow terminals, so this option defaults to _t_e_r_s_e if
