New College, the honors college of University of South Florida, is seeking applications from persons experienced in computer applications or computer science with a commitment to undergraduate teaching and research. He or she will teach in and guide their computer studies program. The position is a tenure track assistant professorship. New College, located on Sarasota Bay on the west coast of Florida, is a small (about 400 students) residential liberal arts college with a distinctive program. Their admission standards are very selective: the average SAT total score is over 1200. The students are motivated and bright, the program emphasizes close interaction with faculty and active engagement in projects. Institutional requirements are few; each discipline designs its own. Thus the faculty have a great deal of independence. The successfull candidate will replace the one person on the faculty whose primary responsibility was computer science. The Division of Natural Sciences also has faculty in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and experimental psychology. Existing faculty have taught courses in high level programming languages, could teach a few other courses, and will provide a supporting matrix to the new person who will coordinate and guide the computer studies program. Funds under the new person's control will be available to develop the program. Present equipment includes several micros (IBM PC's and MacIntoshes); an IBM Series/I with access to an IBM mainframe complex in Tampa; and independent terminals to the mainframe complex. The cost of living is between 10 and 20% less than what it is here in the Northeast, and the climate is subtropical. Beaches are within ten minutes from campus, which is partially located on the John Ringling estate. The University of South Florida has committed considerable funds to the development of the campus, including a new library which is under construction. Applications should include a brief statement of academic interests and tentative suggestions for computer studies at a liberal arts college. The names of three references should also be submitted. These should be sent by February 4 1985 to Peter A. Kazaks Chairman, Division of Natural Sciences New College of USF 5700 Tamiami Trail Sarasota, FL 33580 Please write to Professor Kazaks by USnail rather than sending me electronic mail. I am doing this as a favor to my alma mater, as I am unable to take the position myself as yet. Nemo
