XThese are the special abilities:

X          cold - The extra damage done is cold damage, and as a result will 
X                 not affect cold resistant creatures.
X        defend - This will defend you against whatever special attack type the 
X                 artifact has.  Excalibur and Stormbringer defend against 
X                 level draining attacks (even though Excalibur can't drain 
X                 levels itself), Frost brand defends against cold cold based 
X                 attacks and Fire brand defends against fire based attacks. 
X   drain level - This will drain a level from the creature attacking, 
X                 effectively making it less powerful as well as removing eight 
X                 hp from it. 
X          fire - The extra damage done is fire damage, and as a result will

X        search - Will aid you in searching, much as a ring of searching.
X          seek - This should "aid you in seeking objects."  I'm not sure what

XIDENTIFYING POTIONS:

XThere are several ways of identifying potions, mostly based upon the messages 
Xlisted above.  If you quaff a potion, you should be able to tell what it was 
Xfrom the info in the quaffing section.  Throwing a potion at a monster will 
Xoften tell you what it was from the effects on that monster (especially if you 
Xhave a stethescope to examine it with).  Finally, potions can often be 
Xidentified by breaking them and observing the vapor effect.  Set the potion 
Xdown and kick it until it smashes.  Then pay close attention to what happens.
XOh, and remember - when that red dragon breathes fire at you and your potion 
Xboils and explodes, all is not lost.  You still get the vapor effect, so you 
Xcan figure out what the next one like that will do.

XIDENTIFYING RINGS:

XTo figure out what a ring is, again start by figuring out if the ring is 
Xcursed or not.  If the ring is cursed, don't throw it away!  It's a prime 
Xcandidate for identification through the first method:  chuck it down a sink, 
Xand see what happens.  See the SINK EFFECTS section for more information about 
Xwhat happens when various ring types are thrown down a sink.  If the ring 
Xisn't cursed, it probably is somewhat beneficial.  Try it on.  If something 
Xhappens immediately, you'll know what it is (levitation, for example).  Some 
Xrings can only be identified after being worn for a while - for example, a 
Xring of polymorph will only polymorph you every once in a while, and a ring of 
Xteleport also only works now and then.  Other rings can only be guessed at - 
Xfor instance, if you suddenly can find secret doors easier than you have been, 
Xit might be a ring of searching.  If you suddenly are killing monsters more 
Xeasily, it might be a ring of increase damage.
