This is the monthly Info posting for comp.sources.misc. Hopefully, any questions you have will be answered here; if they are not, send mail to me (allbery@ncoast.UUCP), the moderator. This newsgroup is not for large programs which belong in other sources groups; it is for sources which do not fit elsewhere (for example, MS-DOS and VMS non-game sources) and for the small stuff -- for example, your favorite shell script to set your prompt or etc. -- the little stuff that just doesn't warrant submission to comp.sources.unix (formerly mod.sources), where it'd look a bit silly next to the latest posting of Xterm... As a result, there will be no archiving, and the group will be run in an informal fashion. In general, *anything* will be accepted, but -- (1) Sources that belong elsewhere will be submitted to another newsgroup. This will primarily be done with large programs, which will be forwarded to comp.sources.unix. The determinant for this is whether it has more than one source file or not. (2) Discussion will be routed to comp.sources.d rather than cluttering this newsgroup. This newsgroup isn't expected to be a high-volume one, since the "big" stuff will be sent elsewhere. However, it is to be hoped that people still have the desire to post their favorite prompt generators, integer square root algorithms, etc. (If the last days of net.sources are any indication, they do.) ++Brando -- Brandon S. As a result, there will be no archiving of most sources, and the group will be run in an informal fashion. (If the last days of net.sources are any indication, they do.) > Why moderated? < The moderated comp.sources.misc replaced the unmoderated net.sources in May 1987. This was done by the Usenet backbone in response to the observed fact that net.sources was close to 90% NON-sources. Whether the Usenet in general accepts this solution or not is not yet evident. As stated above, the only reason a submission will be rejected is if it is a non-source. (One submission I have received was a semi-flame -- which was posted to mod.sources. I wonder what r$ thought about that?) I, as the moderator, am striving to get things out as quickly as possible while not posting non-sources; testing is at the moment limited. If it's something that's worth testing, it probably belongs in comp.sources.unix instead.) > What sources are posted here? < I will post directly two kinds of sources: little stuff like "my favorite dice-roll program" or etc., and non-Unix(R) sources. [Disclaimer: Unix is a registered trademark of AT&T.] In particular, I have made arrangements to handle VMS sources, and I have a program to create VMS DCL "shar" files. If a source group exists that covers a particular kind of source, I will usually redirect the submission to that group. The source groups that I know of are: comp.sources.mac comp.sources.amiga comp.sources.atari.st (?) Also, large Unix(R) sources will be sent to comp.sources.unix instead. I will also accept MS-DOS *binary* submissions in uuencoded ARC format, as a special case; these have nowhere else to go, so I will accept them. > Archiving < Most of the submissions to comp.sources.misc are not archived by me, although some other sites may archive them. However, there is enough archiveable traffic that a number of archive sites do exist. I will keep archives of all non-Unix(R) sources, and the occasional large Unix(R) source (such as the beta Ispell 2.0 sources). Rick Perry (perry@vu-vlsi.UUCP, perry@vuvaxcom.BITNET) is archiving all of comp.sources.misc and is willing to distribute sources via UUCP or BITNET mail, or via a direct UUCP connection. He is also willing to make tar or cpio tapes. Contact perry@vu-vlsi.UUCP for more information. I am still looking for sites to archive MS-DOS and VMS sources/binaries. Any interested system administrators should send me mail. > Final words < This newsgroup is something of an experiment. Its continued existence depends on how the net accepts it. If you do not favor a moderated sources newsgroup, please do NOT send me hate mail or post a flame to the net; you should send a non-flame letter to me explaining why you would prefer a non-moderated source group. Contrariwise, if you *do* support a moderated sources newsgroup, you should send mail to me explaining why. I will summarize periodically in the Info postings, and keep the soi-disant "Backbone Cabal" apprised as well. Don't bother flaming about it; you will only be ignored. ++Brandon, your friendly neighborhood comp.sources.misc moderator.

Don't post binaries in source groups.
