[comp.sources.misc] Administrivia

allbery@ncoast.UUCP (04/29/87)

Apologies for getting started late... I've been doing administration on all
this stuff. (Not just inappropriate articles, but also (1) getting rid of
duplicates, thanks to the fact that a number of sites aliased net.sources
to comp.sources.misc up to two weeks ahead of the rest of the net (you know
who you are!), (2) arranging for future duplicates to be rejected automatic-
ally, and (3) making sure the mail's handled right (stripping Path lines so
you see your posting, making sure I don't have to bounce things off the
backbone to post them myself).

Since just about all the traffic here is net.sources spinoff, I'm going to
relax the rules and post multipart source files in the first batch of stuff.

The recent posting of SWING for VMS has raised the question of archiving.
This sources group is not supposed to be archived, but as long as it is the
home for large sources that don't fit anywhere else, those sources should
be archived.

I will perform UUCP and tape (1600bpi tar or cpio -- WARNING, they will be
in 68000 format, which is byte-swapped with respect to VAX) archiving. (I
know, a *big* help for VMSers, sigh....) If some site(s) out there would like
to archive sources, please contact me at one of the following addresses:

	..cbatt!cwruecmp!ncoast!sources-misc-request
	..ames!necntc!ncoast!sources-misc-request
	necntc!ncoast!sources-misc-request@harvard.HARVARD.EDU -or-
	necntc!ncoast!sources-misc-request@eddie.MIT.EDU

It would probably be best to split these by machine type, so a (preferably
VMS) site should do VMS archiving, and other kinds of sources will (if
necessary) be archived by other sites, so that the sites doing the archiving
can create more useful archives (VMS BACKUP tapes, for example).

Note that I will try to create VMS DCL self-unpacking archives (DCLar's?)
of any VMS sources I get, so they will be marginally more useful. Please
specify how you want something from the archive; I will occasionally post
an archive list.

I'm forced to the conclusion that something major is wrong with inews on our
system, because it absolutely refuses to recognize that I am NOT the original
poster of the submissions that go out. The result of this is that I get
many responses to submissions which I cannot forward.

I will include a copy of the From: line in the body of submissions from now
on. Please respond to the address given there, and NOT simply to what your
news program says is the sender. I will also try to determine why inews is
only handling about one in ten articles correctly on ncoast.

[This is a self-moderated posting]

Just a short time ago a small group of self-serving net participants
took it upon themselves to eliminate the long-time unmoderated
net.sources newsgroup and replace it with the new comp.sources.misc,
which they decided should be moderated.

These people simply ignored the accepted rules on newgroup creation.
They apparently feel they have some kind of authority to mandate the
shape and direction of the net.

So now, those of us that prefer to have an unmoderated sources group
(probably the majority of net.sources users) will have to follow the
wishes of this forceful few or take steps to overcome their attacks.

The easiest approach is to post directly to this group (comp.sources.misc)
by adding a line like this:

Approved: self-moderated

to the header of the article with your editor (just like this article).

The concerns of the pro-moderation faction about non-sources being
posted to the sources groups don't seem unreasonable (though their
approach to eliminating them certainly does). Please post non-sources
to a more appropriate group.

Thanks very much.

[remember "Approved: by you" is all it takes.]
