The Columbia University Department of Biological Sciences Computer Graphics Faclity is searching for a full time applications programmer. The applicant should have demonstrated competence and extensive experience as a programmer. Familiarity with computer graphics, the UNIX operating system and the "C" language are also desirable. This position involves working with biological scientists to develop state-of-the-art research tools using advanced computer graphics systems. The Computer Graphics Facility contains a VAX 11/780 running UNIX, an Evans and Sutherland Picture System 2 real time display system, a Grinnell color raster display with image processing hardware, several microcomputers and numerous other digitizing and display devices. The successful applicant will help to design and implement "C" programs and systems for three dimensional anatomical and neuroanatomical reconstruction and display from microscopic sections, CAT and NMR scans, and other biomedical images. Primary emphasis will be on the use of image understanding techniques for the automatic recognition of structures of biological interest. The facility has on order a STAR 100 array processor and a specially designed digital processor for very rapid calculations of the N body problem. The successful applicant would be involved in integrating all of these devices into a smoothly operating system.
