Relational Technology Inc (RTI) is seeking a Unix System Manager to manage a combination of Vaxes, supermicrocomputers, and superminicomputers running various flavors of UNIX. Company Description: RTI is a rapidly expanding, innovative software company located in Berkeley, California. Founded in 1980, we are a people- and results-oriented company with an excellent, informal work environment. INGRES, RTI's principal product, is viewed as the leading independently produced high-performance relational DBMS. It provides a complete set of application development and end-user tools. INGRES is supported on many computer systems. Total company size is approaching 200 employees. RTI has had consistent growth in sales and profits since 1981. The company is privately-held, but will likely go public over the next year or two. RTI will move to a new 5-story facility in Alameda in March. Job Description: The work involves tuning systems, assisting users, load balancing, networking, troubleshooting, developing system utilities, establishing procedures, and working with vendors on problem resolution and installations. Our Unix environment consists of the following: Four Vaxes (750s & 780s) with a combination of 4.2 BSD, System V, and Ultrix. An IBM 4341 running UTS (Unix v7) under VM. Several superminis including a Pyramid and CCI Power 6. Other machines include Sun, 3b5, 3b2, NCR Tower, Burroughs Megaframe, and Masscomp. More UNIX machines will be acquired as we close deals with other hardware vendors that want INGRES. RTI also has several Vaxes running VMS. Many of our machines are networked with TCP/IP and Ethernet. RTI has a System V and BSD source license, and Usenet connections. This is a senior position that will provide leadership and training for an Associate Unix System Manager who will assist in managing these systems. Most of the UNIX users are very knowledgeable. This job is very demanding but should be excellent for those who like a continual variety of challenges in a dynamic environment. Job Qualifications: -Minimum of 3 years of UNIX System Management experience preferred. -In-depth knowledge of UNIX (preferably 4.2 and System V) and C language. -Systems programming experience (operating systems, compilers, and/or DBMS) either in school and/or jobs. -Appropriate disposition to work well with a variety of users and under pressure when a system is down. -BSCS, BSEE, or equivalent. -Permanent resident or US citizen.
