OFFICE AUTOMATION CONCEPTUAL DESIGN POSITION WANTED
The university department where I teach will close this com-
ing June, bringing an end to my six-year career. (Don't get
too excited, I teach information science, not computer sci-
ence.) After much soul searching I have decided to look for
work in business rather than academia.
My knowledge base is strong in textual information process-
ing, particularly capture, storage, and retrieval in large
textual data collections. My background is linguistics, my
foreground computers and information systems, and my
research has focused on social processes which facilitate or
inhibit information exchange, especially among technical
professionals. I believe these skills would be valuable to
companies designing products in the office automation area
for conceptual product development. (Not programming.
While I requested this ID to learn Unix and C, I don't want
a programming job.)
Office automation systems which contain large collections of
memos, letters, documentation and personal notebooks need
software which not only creates but helps manage these large
text files. The seller who provides it will enjoy a com-
petitive advantage. When inventory and sales applications
were automated, it was found that not only was the direct
task easier, but information to manage the task was also im-
proved. Office automation could enjoy similar management in-
formation improvements with proper planning.
Planning is needed because not only software but sys-
tems architecture is affected. Do you know any office auto-
mation system producers who might hire me for this effort?
Are they planning to use Unix-based systems? If you don't
know of any particular company, can you suggest strategies
to help me identify and then approach such an organization?
