The Ultracomputer project at New York University has an immediate opening for an experienced system software research and development person. The Ultracomputer is an MIMD shared-memory architecture consisting of thousands of processing elements (PEs) all accessing multiple memory modules via a multistage interconnection network. Each PE also has its own cache. The design is driven by (1) the need to avoid serial bottlenecks in hardware or software, so as to allow effective use of such a highly parallel machine; and (2) the desire for a general and simple programming model that is not tied to a particular algorithmic structure or data flow pattern. Our currently running prototype consists of 8 MC68010-based PEs with caches (to be upgraded in the next year to 68020/68881s with caches). Our operating system is a version of UNIX (based on v7) with a kernel that is parallel (concurrently executed by multiple PEs) and symmetric (no master/slave relationship). Primitive but usable facilities are provided for parallel applications. We have software instruction and address tracing facilities, for use in architectural and operating systems research. The operating system and software environment are being developed both for our own hardware and for a much larger prototype, which includes the Ultracomputer architecture plus significant extentions, being considered by IBM Research Division at Yorktown Heights. The job will involve research into and further development of system software for the Ultracomputer. Specific areas include: further elimination of serial bottlenecks in the kernel design of new critical-section-free algorithms and data structures improved operating system support for parallel applications parallel languages and tools for parallel application development parallel debuggers upgrading to 4.2BSD support for newer prototype hardware performance evaluation, monitoring enhancement of monitoring facilities operating system testing hardware diagnostics general software support We are part of the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, located in Greenwich Village, New York City. Salary is competitive and NYU benefits are excellent (including four weeks annual vacation and tuition remission). NYU is an equal opportunity affirmative action employer.
