POSITION: Network Systems Engineer LOCATION: Boston University in Boston, Mass. Boston University is seeking an engineer to help form a new group within the department of University Communications Systems. Currently, the University's Campus Network consists of a broadband mid-split trunk system, numerious independent baseband systems, and T1 digital microwave links to remote network sites. The current broadband system consists of one channel dedicated to 1000 ports of terminal data traffic, one channel dedicated to host-to-host traffic utilizing TCP/IP, 4 channels of two-way instructional video, and one channel of point-to-point modems for DECNET and BITNET links. For most data applications we are utilizing the Ungermann-Bass Net/One product line. The network has been growing very rapidly and it has become apparent that we need to find an individual to take over the technical and managerial responsibilities of the network system. Currently, we are expanding the broadband system by 50 percent and adding status monitering capabilities. Additionally, the Medical School has requested that a broadband system be installed with both data and video capabilities. In the next two years we can expect that the system will grow by 200 percent with local bridges serving baseband systems installed in various academic and administrative departments. This position will be highly visible throughout the University and to many outside organizations that look to us for advise and guidance. We are looking for an individual who has done CATV design for data network systems, as well as, project management/responsibility for general CATV distribution systems, including installations, certification, and maintenance. Video experience in a CATV enviroment is a definite plus. Experience with MS-DOS and U*ix, along with C programming is extremely desirable. A Bachelor's in Computer, Systems, or Electrical Engineering and two years experience are required. Greater experience will offset the educational requirement. Salary is competitive with industry and the benefits are good, including 4 week vacation to start, and liberal tuition benefits for yourself, spouse, and siblings (kids go for free - not very helpful to 30 year old engineers). If you would like to discuss this position in further detail please feel free to contact me.
