The elements are Xdivided into minimally five basic types (files, directories, Xcharacter special files, block special files, and fifos) and Xare printed in alphabetical order. They are normally printed Xcolumn-wise across the screen, preceded by a title indicating Xthe type. The X.B \-1 Xoption can be used to force single-column untitled output. X.PP X.B lc Xuses the environment variables X.B LC X, X.B CDPATH Xand X.B COLS Xto allow you to set up a default set of display options that X.B lc Xshould use each time is it run. Options on the command line override Xoptions specified in the environment if there is a conflict. X.B LC Xis used to set X.B lc Xspecific options. All command line options shown in the option list Xbelow can be used in setting default options within the environment Xvariable X.B LC. X.B CDPATH Xis searched for a file not found at the requested location or Xin the current directory. This is an extremely handy feature of X.B lc. X.B COLS Xis used to switch the column width between 80 and 132 column display. X.PP X.B lc Xhas incorporated the minimal the spell checking routines found in the book, XThe UNIX Programming Environment, by Brian Kernighan and Rob Pike. X.PP XIf the command line argument list contains more than one name, the Xcontents of the directories named in the list are displayed and all Xother names are displayed one per line with the type of the file Xdisplayed on the same line. If the X.B -D Xoption is supplied in the environment or on the command line all Xnon-directory files are ignored. If no file or directory is specified the Xcurrent working directory is listed by default. The special entries X``.'' and ``..'' are not listed. X.PP XNot all options are supported on every system. (e.g. no symbolic links Xon your system ? Options X.B -s, -I -L Xor X.B -l Xwon't be available...) On systems which support symbolic links, Xthe symbolic links are normally followed, and each prints under Xthe category of the type of file to which it is linked. If the Xsymbolic link points to a nonexistent path name, or if you do not Xhave permission to resolve the path name, X.B lc Xprints out an error message indicating it cannot resolve the link. XThis type of message can be suppressed through the use of the X.B 'I' Xoption described below. X.SH OPTIONS X.IP "-a" 6 XList dot files as well. Normally X.B lc Xdoes not display files beginning with a '.' unless this option is Xspecified. The system '.' and '.. files are never displayed since Xthey give you no real additional information and would just clutter Xup the display. X.IP "-b" XList block special files only. X.IP "-c" XList character special files only. X.IP "-d" XList directories only. X.IP "-D" XDo not display singular files. If you do not use this option and Xexecute "lc /unix", your output will be "/unix: file". This is Xuseful in shell scripts but is sometimes annoying if you execute Xa command such as "lc /usr/lib/*" and all you wish to see is the Xfirst level of directories and not a lot of "filename: file" messages. X.IP "-e" XMark executable files with '*'. This options allows you to have executables Xdisplayed with a '*' appended to the end of the file name. X.IP "-f" XList regular files only. X.IP "-F" XList fifo files only. X.IP "-I" XDo not report unresolved symbolic link messages. Normally X.B lc Xprints out a message stating that it cannot resolve the symbolic link. XUse of this option suppresses the display of those messages. X.IP "-l" XMark symbolic links with '@'. This options allows you to have symbolic Xlinks displayed with a '@' appended to the end of the file name. X.IP "-L" XDisplay symbolic links. This options allows you to have X.B lc Xoutput a display showing what files the symbolic links refer to. X.IP "-m" XList shared memory name space entry files only. X.IP "-M" XList semaphore name space entry files only. X.IP "-r" XList the directory entries as they appear in the directory file. No Xsorting of output prior to displaying.
