Computer Science Dept. at IIT Kanpur is looking for faculty members in
all areas. The Dept. has programs leading to B.Tech., M.Tech., and Ph.D.
degrees. The UG program is rigorous and emphasizes both concepts and
software skills. The PG programs are research oriented.
Following are the faculty interests: OS and Distributed Systems; Compiler
Design, Software Environments and Methodologies; Programming Languages;
Architecture; Databases; Theory; Formal Logic and CS; Natural Language
Processing; Vision; CAD/CAM; etc. Some of the ongoing/recent projects are
as follows. Design and implementation of: Unix kernel, C Compiler, Relational
DBMS, Drafting Package, Geometric Modelling Package, and various AI tools like
Knowledge Representation System, ATN Interpreter, Prolog. Design of Devnagri
Terminal. Machine Translation among Indian Languages. Recognition of Hand-
written text. Kernel Constructible Languages.
Computing facilities comprise of DEC System 10, two 68000 based UNIX systems,
PERQ, a number of Acorn 8-bit micros, and a microprocessor laboratory. IBM PC
compatibles also available within the Institute. Have an uptodate library.
There is considerable flexibility in design of courses and curriculum.
Funds are available both internally as well as through funding agencies.
Ours is a young and energetic department. Atmosphere is informal and
infectious for doing 'things' (as evident by the many ongoing group projects).
Visiting positions are also available. Normally, appointments can be made
within one or two months on receipt of request. The duration of the
appointment can be for a year, a semester, or less (e.g., six weeks)
depending on the request. Structured visits (stretching over summers for
example) can also be arranged.
