[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] Echo services

gkn@SDSC-SDS.ARPA (04/17/87)

All of the VAXen here at SDSC have TCP Echo (port 7, RFC 862), TCP Discard
(port 9, RFC 863), and character generator (port 19, RFC 864) services on
them. These were put in place to help debug (and proved invaluable) the
underlying communications software for the FTP client program on our Cray
X-MP/48. In addition to these services there are a number of others, including
a "congested" version of the Echo and Discard services which proved to be
interesting obstacles in making the communications on the Cray as robust as
possible.

I doubt seriously that we could have made the stuff for the Cray work without
them. I also wish that some of these services were available someplace besides
our local ethernet; we were severly flamed for using an echo server on another
host elsewhere in the network (hence the "congested" versions).
