[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] Old-style nameservers

JBVB@AI.AI.MIT.EDU.UUCP (04/18/87)

We allow up to three of each kind (domain and IEN-116), as well
as a host table in our configuration. We distribute a public-domain
IEN-116 nameserver for 4BSD on our "Unsupported Network Software"
diskette, partly because we were sure we could do so legally, and
partly because it is much simpler (most people who want it aren't
on the Internet yet). We would like to give out bind, as well, but
it has "Copyright Regents of..." all over it, and no release. We
*do* have more room on the diskette, if anyone wishes to point me at
p-d goodies of general utility. It would be nice to put all nine
4.3 patches on it, too...

As you probably know, Bridge, in their recent upgrading of some of
their product line, chose to use IEN-116. It is definitely better
than hosttables.
