Announcing the 1987 NCAR Summer Supercomputing Institute 10-21 August 1987, Boulder, Colorado Scientific Computing Division National Center for Atmospheric Research The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) is pleased to announce that a Supercomputing Institute will be held this summer at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) located in Boulder, Colorado. The Institute is being sponsored by the National Science Foundation's Division of Advanced Scientific Computing (NSF/DASC) with assistance from the Physical Oceanography Program of NSF. The Institute will be managed and coordinated by NCAR's Scientific Computing Division (SCD). BACKGROUND The Institute is a two-week intensive training experience designed to provide an understanding of how supercomputing capabilities can augment scientific research. Learning how to apply supercomputing methods to a variety of investigations that require large-scale computation is a key objective of the Institute. To meet this objective, the Institute's curriculum has been carefully arranged to give each participant an opportunity to explore new approaches to using supercomputing technology. Lectures by internationally recognized experts in the field of supercomputing and laboratory sessions are geared to maximize the learning experience by providing real-world applications based upon current research efforts employing supercomputers. A maximum of 25 senior graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and junior faculty will be selected from national, accredited universities and research institutions that confer advanced degrees in the atmospheric and physical oceanographic sciences, solar physics, and related disciplines. Applications from individuals attending any institution meeting this requirement will be considered. INSTITUTE CURRICULUM The 1987 Supercomputing Institute will cover the following topics: - Operating Systems and Machine Configurations - Vectorization and Optimization Techniques - Parallel Processing - Numerical Techniques - Software Availability and Quality - Communications and Networking - Graphics INSTITUTE BENEFITS Successful candidates will have all travel, per diem, and accommodation expenses paid for by the Institute. In addition, computing time will be made available to all participants on the CRAY X-MP/48 supercomputer at NCAR. Support services consistent with all institute-related computing will also be provided. APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS To be considered for admission to the 1987 Supercomputing Institute, an applicant should have a minimum graduate GPA of 3.5 (postdocs and junior faculty excepted), provide two letters of recommendation indicating the applicant's research capabilities and the potential for their research to advance disciplinary knowledge, and an abstract of not more than 250 words relating how the applicant's research endeavors (either planned or underway) would benefit from applying supercomputing technology to their investigations. Successful candidates should have knowledge of FORTRAN 77 and be working on research projects that already use supercomputers or anticipate using them in the near future. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance into the Institute by 1 July 1987. APPLICATION DEADLINE Individuals who meet the above requirements are encouraged to apply for admission to the 1987 Summer Supercomputing Institute.
