Come on up, it's not all bad. I moved to the valley in "78 and was appalled by the traffic and the carpet of houses from one set of hills to the other, but once I made the adjustment it seems very good. Given where you are coming from I would think you'd find it quite pleasant. Good schools are in Palo Alto and in Cupertino, both easy commutes to Mountain View. Los Altos Hills and Saratoga are nearby heavy-duty housing price areas. Mountain View itself is actually rather "old". The areas of most building for housing are actually away from MtView, so if you are looking for affordable new housing you are in for a commute. However, much activity in condos and the like on the directly opposite side of the bay in Fremont, and the Bridge and approaches on both sides are done over recently...with a few more touches it will be an easy drive. The really attractive thing about the area is proximity to Santa Cruz mountains to the south and west, and of course to Sierra. Beaches are cold and virtually unusable. Traffic is comparable to rush hour in major cities, even the west side of st.louis is as bad these days. (Both are comparable to leaving the parking lot of a superbowl game.) The bottom line is that several opportunities to go elsewhere were in my estimation not as nice an area. (But I no longer have small children)
