The National Optical Astronomy Observatories
(NOAO) is seeking a senior level Mechanical Tech-
nician to work at its Kitt Peak site near Tucson,
Arizona. The job duties are to diagnose and remedy
mechanical and optical problems with telescopes,
perform routine adjustment and preventative
maintenance of mechanical and optical systems,
initiate and/or implement modifications to tele-
scope facilities, perform instrument changes, and
perform vacuum deposited mirror coatings. The suc-
cessful applicant will be required to operate
telescopes for the purpose of collimation,
optical/mechanical testing, and instrument
changes.
Applicants should have familiarity and experience
with mechanical systems, some design experience,
and hands-on experience with hydraulic, vacuum,
pneumatic, and mechanical systems. A minimum of
15 years experience with mechanical systems along
with the ability to read blueprints is required.
In addition, the following experience is highly
desirable: operation of metal working machinery,
handling and aluminizing of large optics, and
technical writing.
The NOAO, which is headquartered in Tucson,
Arizona, operates Kitt Peak National Observatory
near Tucson, Arizona, National Solar Observatory
sites at Sacramento Peak, New Mexico, and on Kitt
Peak, Cerro-Tololo Inter-american Observatory in
Chile and the Advanced Development Program in Tuc-
son.
