APPLICATIONS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMER MIT's Project Athena is an ambitious five year experiment to integrate computers into the education process. The hardware will be a conglomeration of 3600 DEC and IBM workstations, coupled by a campuswide network, serving the MIT community. Each workstation will be a 32-bit UNIX engine with high resolution monochrome graphics (currently VAX-11/750 file servers and Microvax IIs; also IBM PC-ATs with Professional Graphics). The Project is seeking experienced programmers to work with MIT professors and staff in many disciplines to build a wide range of software systems. There are currently over sixty development projects underway, in fields which include Writing, Foreign Languages and Literature, Life Sciences, and Mathematics as well as Engineering. The work is expected to be continually varied and interesting. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a well equipped effort to use computers for university education, in a stimulating environment. Excellent benefits include four weeks paid vacation. Successful candidates will enjoy regular contact with users, have good oral and written communication skills, and 1 year or more full time experience with at least two of the following: UNIX (4.2 bsd preferred), C, Fortran-77, LISP, Interactive computer graphics.
