Unix System Manager position at Stanford University Computer Science Department The job: Technical manager of a dozen or more Unix systems (Vax-11/780, 750, and perhaps Sun, Pyramid, and others) for the Computer Science Department. Duties include software maintenance and development, network liaison, user assistance, specification and installation of new systems and hardware, supervision of dump operators, and disaster prevention and recovery. In general, you would be supporting research, not instructional, computing, and providing research projects with the best possible computing environment. The department: Stanford's Computer Science Department is one of the best in the country, using Unix systems to support many challenging research projects. The department is blessed with a lot of modern computer hardware, including Vax and TOPS-20 timesharing systems, Sun workstations, LISP machines, laser printers, and high-speed local networks tying this all together. Stanford is located near San Francisco, in Silicon Valley, with all the cultural and natural advantages of a large University in the Bay Area. Qualifications: Essential: experience with Unix and C, and good communication skills. Desirable: experience with kernel programming, networking.
