PROGRAMMER/ANALYST, Professional Research Assistant.

The Department of Computer Science  has  an  opening  for  a
programmer/analyst  to support a large distributed computing
project.  This position is the first of three related  posi-
tions to be filled during the next year to assist faculty in
research in artificial intelligence, numerical  computation,
and software engineering.

-    The artificial intelligence position requires knowledge
     of  AI  and  LISP programming; some knowledge of frame-
     works for  knowledge  representation,  an  interest  in
     human-computer communication, and familiarity with high
     performance personal workstations would be helpful.

-    The numerical computation position  requires  knowledge
     of  numerical  analysis  and software; familiarity with
     the C programming language, UNIX operating system,  and
     numerical optimization would be helpful.

-    The software engineering position requires knowledge of
     software  engineering  and  operating  systems,  C, and
     Berkeley UNIX including its networking facilities; some
     experience  with window/mouse interfaces would be help-
     ful.

specialization.  The responsibilities of all three positions
will  include  computer programming on computers running the
Berkeley UNIX operating system, use of  UNIX  including  its
interprocess  communication facilities, aid in the design of
computer  algorithms,  and   investigations   into   related
research  projects.  A masters degree in computer science or
electrical  engineering  is   preferred;   applicants   with
appropriate  experience who have a masters degree in another
field, or a bachelors degree in computer science or electri-
cal  engineering,  may  be considered.  Salary to be commen-
