[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] IP assigned protocol numbers

zeilenga@hc.dspo.gov (Kurt Zeilenga) (09/01/87)

According to "Assigned Protocol Numbers," available from the NIC,
The gateway-to-gateway protocol, GGP, should be protocol 3. When
looking thru the .h files on our system (SUN UNIX) I noticed that
GGP was using protocol number 2. I checked other systems (other
BSD based systems), and they too were using protocol 2 for GGP.
Mmmm.

Comments?

Kurt,

GGP is used only by the LSI-11 core gateways, who would be sore vexed,
indeed, if some host tried to horn in that protocol. Don't worry about
the number (it really is 3), just destroy all references to it, wherever
found.
