I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned Greg Chesson's work on a protocol engine that can process 100 Mbit FDDI packets in real time, implementing reliable connections and datagrams, and internetwork routing, in hardware. Greg works for Silicon Graphics but the protocols and hardware involved are non-proprietary and I believe there is a multivendor group working on implementing his design. See his paper, "Protocol Engine Design" in the Usenix conference proceedings from summer 1987. -- {dasys1,ncoast,well,sun,ihnp4}!hoptoad!gnu gnu@toad.com
