[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] how do I setup a unique address for our system?

edward@comp.vuw.ac.nz (Ed Wilkinson) (10/23/87)

We're trying to setup some sort of tcp-based network and would
like to read some documents detailing how to chose a tcp address.
i.e. the 4 number string. Could someone please point me towards
an article/paper which describes how to chose such a network ad-
dress? We've got a Vax 750 running (soon) Ultrix 2.0 & are trying
to connect a VMS machine using their tcp package. Later we hope
to add some Suns to this network.

Any references or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in
advance.

RFCs are one of the best source for this. RFC 992 discusses Internet Numbers.
There are other RFCs such as RFC 950 dealing with subnetting, and RFC 882 and
RFC 883 dealing with Domain names which may prove to be very useful.
Aside from that there is a DDN Protocol handbook call 1(800)235-3155 for
ordering info. This handbook contains background info as well numerous RFCs.
