[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] Fetching host tables from the NIC

steve@BRILLIG.UMD.EDU (Steve D. Miller) (11/04/87)

For a few days now, I've had problems in reaching the NIC. When I try to
fetch HOSTS.TXT, do a whois lookup, or just to telnet in, I sometimes get
TCP resets, and sometimes just get timeouts. When I last telnetted to the
SMTP port on the NIC, though, it worked fine. If it was just timeouts, I
wouldn't be so surprised, but it seems strange to me that the NIC would tell
me to go away when I try to reach certain well-known ports and not others.

Is something funny going on out there? I'd sure like to update my
host tables, for those last few machines who need to use it...

You ought to use the domain system rather than host tables,
but since you are on MILNET you can ftp or use the port 101
server to pull the NIC host table off BRL-AOS. It is available
in the file <NETINFO>HOSTS.TXT
