[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] Ethernet/IP Testing/Monitoring Tools

satish@ACC-SB-UNIX.ARPA (Satish B. Joshi) (11/06/87)

Does anyone know of any tools for monitoring and/or testing networks
in Ethernet, Unix-4.3BSD(VAX), and TCP/IP environment? I believe that some
tools similar to SUN's "etherfind", and software to generate bogus IP
datagrams were discussed here.

I will appreciate any information about software to test protocols,
specific interface boards or gateways, and to monitor Ethernets. Thanks.

FTP Software sells a low-cost network monitor called LANWatch. This is
derived from the MIT freeware program NETWATCH, with many features added.
Our symbolic filters and detailed packet examination mode understand most
IP protocols and formats, from IP and ICMP to TCP. We sell the package as
software-only, you supply the PC and the interface. We provide enough source
so users can extend the symbolic filters and packet displays to include
protocols we don't support. We also provide source for the off-line analysis
programs that process packets dumped to disk.

We support a number of different PC network cards, and our performance
depends on which card and how fast a machine you put it in. Even with a
fast one in a fast AT, our packet capture ratio is unlikely to match that
of a network monitor with special hardware. However, we feel that our
cost makes up for a good deal in that department.

The present release, 1.0, only has symbolic breakdowns for IP & relatives.
LANWatch 1.1 will have a much better understanding of XNS, DECNet and 802.2/IP
protocols, and it should be available next month. We don't have any traffic
generation tools in the package yet.

Hello

Hewlett Packard and Excelan (San Jose) make Lan Analyzers.
Both will do the job you have described.
