[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] SATNET MTU

jleddy@VAX.BBN.COM (John Leddy) (11/23/87)

Folks,

My name is John Leddy and I work at BBN on the SATNET project. I noticed
several messages questioning the maximum packet size on the SATNET.

To clear things up, the SATNET has a maximum packet size of 256 bytes but
because of a 6 byte gateway to gateway header the maximum IP packet size is
250 bytes.

John,

Eeek. What is in that six-octet gateway-gateway header? Is this for the
b'rflies? Please tell me it aint so. In fact, it would be a wonderful thing
to explain in detail how the buttergates manage their intergateway routing
and what expectations it places on the underlying networks. Is the six octets
required in every network through which a butter flutters?
