[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] A,B,C-class vs subnetting

nelson@CLUTX.CLARKSON.EDU (Russell Nelson) (12/20/87)

As far as I can tell, subnetting is a generalization of the A, B, and C class
concept. Can someone explain this as sweetly as the recent paper on gateways
versus routers did? Even if you can't do as good a job, I'd still like to
know :-).

The best explanation of subnets is probably in RFC-917, Jeff Mogul's
original proposal for the now-standard scheme. That RFC includes some
case studies and explanations which were cut when it was edited into
RFC-950. The additional material explains the tradeoffs in the design.
