[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] Naming schemes

GR.PJL@ISUMVS.BITNET ("Paul Lustgraaf") (12/23/87)

Does anyone out there care to comment about naming schemes?
I have to choose between a 3 level and a 4 level machine
name, ie. vaxa.iastate.edu vs. vaxa.cc.iastate.edu,
Where vaxa is the machine and cc is the subnet (usually a
department name). Any comments either way?

I think you should plan on growth and give other departments the
opportunity to name machines independently. This opinion says you
should use vaxa.cc.iastate.edu. I don't think you should break up
names based on "subnet" as subnets are physical things but naming
hierarchies are more administrative things. There may be associatations
between subnets and departments at your site, however, I know of some
places that have many subnets within one department as well as places
that have many departments on one subnet.
