[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] Help!!! token rings

kopaz@rdlvax.RDL.COM (John 'Echo' Kopaz) (01/19/88)

prelude:	i know very little about nets and stuff
		(enough to be dangerous)....

question:	what would be required (hw/sw) to connect a token ring of pc's
to an ethernet of suns, vaxen, and an alliant? i want to be
able to rlogin from the pc's and/or submit jobs to mdqs. i
would also like to to stick to tcp/ip as transfer/internet
protocols on the token ring (if i can...).

query: can pc-nfs do this??? ( it would be nice to have all systems
		under nfs.....)

background:	we are running bsd4.3 on the vax, the current sun release, and
a bsd4.2 derivative on the alliant ( all these under nfs ).
we are running desk view on the pc's ( also trying other
		multitasking dos ).

plead: where would i look to gain knowlage in this area?
texts, papers, etc... ( taking the prelude into concideration )

respond:	via email please ( i don't have time to read the news all the
		time.:-)

disclamer:	the spelling is mine.

I am currently un-aware of any PC NFS products that would work with the
4Mbs Token Ring. If there is such a product please let me know.

I a currently using the IBM TCP/IP for the PC to TELNET, FTP, etc to
from other TCP/IP machines on our network. The IBM software includes
an IP gateway between Token Ring, IBM PC Network (new cards) and ethernet.

The IBM software is part of Program Number 5798-FAL. It has a fair number of
TCP/IP based programs which I will not detail here. The TELNET emulates an
h19u ascii terminal or uses tn3270 if talking to a VM host. TFTP and FTP
are available, though there is no server mode for FTP. There are also
several commands to deal with mail from the PC that I have not played with,
but they seem based on the Rand Mail Handler as far as the user interface
is concerned and use SMTP to POP server.

Though I haven't tried it you could probably also gateway with a Proteon
p4200 with both 4Mbs token ring and ethernet.

I belive FTP has suport for TCP/IP on the token ring, though I am uncertain
what they recomend at the gateway between token ring and ethernet.

Hope this helps some,

We do indeed have products for token rings: One for the IBM TOKREUI
software interface (which is emulated by some other vendors), and one for
the Proteon P1340/1344 card in native mode. As of this moment, the TOKREUI
version supports source-routing on bridged rings, the P1340 doesn't yet.
We don't include an NFS, but we do have Telnets (including TN3270), Rlogins,
SMTP mail (no POP), FTP client & server, TFTP client/server, LPR, REXEC,
RSH, RCP, Finger, etc.

Our software can use any IP router that has an interface for 802.5, including
P4200s, IBM software, or RTs with 4BSD and multiple interfaces.
