NATIONAL OPTICAL ASTRONOMY OBSERVATORIES NATIONAL SOLAR OBSERVATORY - SUNSPOT, NEW MEXICO - ENGINEERING MANAGER/ELECTRONIC ENGINEER The National Optical Astronomy Observatories (NOAO) is seeking a senior level electronic engineer who will function as the manager for the engineering group located at the National Solar Observatory (NSO) Sacramento Peak site in Sunspot, New Mexico. The job duties are basically electronic circuit design in support of the development of instrumentation to be util- ized in ground-based solar astronomy. In addition, the indi- vidual will be responsible for the management of a group of approximately twelve engineers, technicians and programmers. The major projects are related to the implementation of solid-state detectors in state-of-the-art optical instrumen- tation and to the upgrading of the performance of computer- controlled telescopes. The department is also responsible for the maintenance and development of equipment for the four NSO telescopes located on Sacramento Peak and for the occasional development of equipment for the NSO facilities located on Kitt Peak near Tucson, Arizona. Applicants should have a master's degree in electronic engineering plus seven years circuit design experience (or a B.S. plus 10 years experience). Previous work experience must include significant low-level analog and servo system circuit design activities. Digital circuit design and micro-processor software experience is also required. Desirable experience would include familiarity with one or more of the following: 68000 Multibus microprocessors, solid-state detector arrays (CCDs), Perkin-Elmer and VAX computers, AMD 2900 series bit-slice processors, and assem- bly language programming. Previous experience in the techni- cal direction and supervision of technical staff would be a plus. The job requires a self-motivated, professionally mature individual who can work with limited administrative and technical supervision.
