This year at MITRE, we have a task for the DDN PMO to look at network performance as seen by an end-user. I an interpreting 'end-user' to be an application protocol, such as TELNET or FTP, to discount the variability in application protocol implementations. This task includes finding metrics (such as response time and throughput) that define end-user performance (we are starting with ANSI X3.102), building a prototype system to measure those metrics on top of TCP, and actually doing some measurements and writing about the experience (what numbers did we get, what lessons about measuring the network did we learn). In order to also learn from the community (I don't believe we are the first to attempt end-user performance measurements) I am interested in collecting information about other end-use performance measurement tools and experiences. In particular, I would like to know 1)what metrics were used, 2)how they were measured, 3)what type of tool is used - a separate application or measurements within an application layer protocol (like FTP), and 4)any problems or lessons learned about using the tool, doing end-user measurements, doing the data analysis, etc. Please respond to me directly -- mcleod@gateway.mitre.org -- I will summarize to the list, if people are interested. Thank you. Sue McLeod The MITRE Corporation, McLean, Virginia
