[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] *Ethernet* vs *802.3* or whatever

efbatey%tervax.DECnet@NSWSES.ARPA ("TERVAX::EFBATEY") (05/18/88)

         Just got involved with trying to track down interface between
         HP3000 (MPE_V OS) and my DEC-VMS/SUN/SysV compatible hosts.

         The Wollongong folks offered me a possible solution which may
         shed some light on the Common Ethernet ( we most ALL use ) VS
         *IEEE 802.3*.

         I can't distinguish between them in my limited understanding.
         As I come to understand CISCO / cisco offers a bridge which
         takes E_1 from net_1 and translates the E_1 packets into E_2
         packets to resend on net_1, potentially, or on net_2 and vice
         versa.

         From this proposition, I infer the E_1 and E_2 packets (1)
         may coexist on one net but (2) cannot be substituted directly
         for each other.

         Would someone like to further enlighten me?
