We are in the process of configuring several local area networks which will be linked together through another host serving as a router. We also have a DDN host for Milnet connectivity. In considering the configuration, the question was raised as to how an FTP can be done between a LAN user and a foreign host on DDN. A picture of the system is given below. Each LAN has a DEC MicroVax II for the server. Each MV2 is connected to a DEC 8650 via DECNet or dial-up access. There is a second VAX 8650 serving as the DDN host. The 8650s are connected by DECNet as well. All machines are running Ultrix-32 with TCP/IP. _______ ________ ________ +=======+ ___________ | | | | | | { } | | | MV2 |_____| VAX |______| VAX |___{ DDN }___| FOREIGN | |_______| | | 8650 | | | 8650 | { } | HOST | | | |________| | |________| +=======+ |___________| ___|____ |______________| | | (alternate) | Z248 | ( route ) | USER | (possbile ) |________| Problem: A user on a Zenith Z-248 logs into the MV2 and then wants to do an FTP beteen the MV2 and a DDN foreign host. Is there a way to make the two VAX 8650s function in such a manner that the FTP occurs directly between the MV2 and foreign host rather than using the DDN host as an intermediary (i.e. requiring two FTPs)? If software can be written to do this function, where can it be obtained if already written? Please send all responses directly to me, not the TCP-IP group.
