[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] icmp overload

MKL@SRI-NIC.ARPA (Mark Lottor) (07/14/88)

Over the last two days (at least), 24% of all the packets we receive
are ICMP messages. Of those, 13% are unreachables and 7% are redirects.
This seems really excessive. Is anyone else seeing stuff like this?

Mark, can you tell if they are host- or net- unreachables? Which gateways are
sending you the ICMP replies? Can you tell if either the unreachables or the
redirects happen contrary to what you would expect from "routing by
inspection"? In other words, are they caused because you are trying to send
bunches of mail to hosts which are, in fact, down?

Sorry, no answers. Only questions?
Mike
