[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] Token ring IP encapsulation

cam%columbia-pdn@ACC-SB-UNIX.ARPA (Chris Markle acc_gnsc) (07/19/88)

Folks,

Where are the particulars specified regarding transmission of IP datagrams over
Token Ring (802.5) networks (eg. RFC's, IDEA's, etc.)?

Is there a necessity to support the optional RI (Routing Information) field
in the MAC header when IP is used ("optional" meaning the RI field is not
always present in the MAC header)? This field supports link-level source
routing (ala IBM).

I presume that IP packets must actually be encapsulated in LLC framing and
that in turn is encapsulated in MAC framing. Correct? Comments?

Again, pointers to documents where this is specified / described would be
most appreciated.

802.2 IP encapsulation on 802.3, 4, and 5 are covered in RFC1042.
