WANTED: SYMBOLICS 3600 SYSTEMS PROGRAMMER Schlumberger Palo Alto Research (SPAR) is embarking on a major project to create a top-quality, fully-distributed computing environment based on Symbolics 3600 user and server machines without conventional mainframes. We plan significant improvements and extensions to the Symbolics 3600 environment, including file server capabilities, access from a home (possibly graphics) terminal, optical disks for backup and secondary disk storage, and whatever other ideas seem to be featureful. We have an immediate opening for a highly-talented programmer to join our Systems Group, and work with two others on the above project. When this project is completed (in about a year), the group will turn its attention to other advanced systems projects of interest to its members and of use to the laboratory as a whole. Examples include distributed systems, remote graphics protocols, integration of new custom-designed hardware into the environment, high-quality document and typesetting systems, extension of optical-disk facilities, etc. Environment: SPAR currently has about 80 researchers, 21 Symbolics 3600's, 70 SUN work stations, two VAX-780's and one DEC-20. The DEC-20, currently in use mostly as a 3600 file-server, will be sold once the above project is completed. Job requirements: Experience with LISP programming, especially lisp machines, ability to learn quickly and work independently.
