[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] security & network mail headers

lance@redbaron.UUCP (Lance Browne) (10/08/88)

Does anyone participating in this discussion group know of any work
done using the SMTP header field "Encrypted", which shows up on pages
24 and 25 of RFC 822?

A little background, we are currently working on trying to send an
SMTP mail message with a CRC based on the entire message (mail header
and text). Since mail headers can change, and usually do, does anyone
know how it would be possible to CRC an entire message and pass the
message through the internet and have the CRC remain valid? Could this
be done without changing SMTP requirements to recalculate a new CRC
after each header line is added?

It is possible to CRC just the text of a mail message and trust the
mail header to only contain network relevant information, but that is
not desirable.

Thanks for any help.
