Network Technician ( Electronic Technician ) The Computer Services Group of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University has an an opening for a Network Technician to provide shop and field level support for communications and networking. There is opportunity for considerable personal initiative. The person hired will be responsible for: implementing minor expansion of existing networks and communications facilities; installation and testing for correct performance of terminals, workstations and personal computers connected to a network which may be baseband, broadband or fiberoptic; keep documentation on the networks and their connections current; act as backup for the Network Manager. The position requires a thorough knowledge of asynchronous, synchronous and IBM interconnection standards and protocols; familiarity and experience with personal computers (IBM, Macintosh) and their interconnection via telecommunications and networks; familiarity with test equipment used for communications and networking. Educational background should include: major technical qualification beyond high school (a baccalaureate degree would be advantageous); Knowledge of networking protocols and user experience with computers supporting the UNIX and VMS operating systems would be helpful. The person hired must be capable of interacting pleasantly and competently with people at all levels within the Faculty.
