[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] "Reliable Datagrams"

ZREN@DS0RUS1I.BITNET (Michael Nittmann) (10/27/88)

some hints on reliability: if it is not reliable, is it, then,

        non-reliable or unreliable?

This is the question here I think since if you know what something is NOT
you have to state what is IS (at least in my positive attitude).

Of course an IP datagram is nor unreliable sice it has a checksum (this
IP header-checksum construct) and we can decide whether it's contents are
correct or not.
It is non-reliable since we cannot rely on it's delivery. There is no ack.

So I conclude that the IP datagram mechanism is a very reliable method to
deliver datagrams in a non-reliable fassion.

michael (and, all disclaimers of course.)
