Hi. I have a copy of RFC 961, "Current Official Arpanet Protocols" which has a notation that it "Obsoletes: RFCs 944, 924, 901, 880, 840" but (since it's on paper) it has no "Is Obsoleted by: RFCs (mumble)". Is there any place I can look to find out what today's version of the official list is, where "today" varies from time to time, but the place I look doesn't? - George McKee NU Computer Science

George, The NIC maintains an RFC index which is updated whenever a new RFC is announced. You can retrieve the index via FTP (host: sri-nic.arpa, user: anonymous, password: guest, file: rfc:rfc-index.txt) or by electronic mail (send a message to service@sri-nic.arpa with the words RFC INDEX in the subject line). The index shows that RFC 961 has been obsoleted by RFC 991 which has been obsoleted by RFC 1011, "Official Internet Protocols", issued in May, 1987. Sol/NIC -------

George McKee: Hi. The latest "Official Protocols" is RFC-1011. The current list of RFCs is available in the file RFC:RFC-INDEX.TXT on the host SRI-NIC.ARPA. --jon.

As of Saturday, 29 OCT 88, the current "Official Arpanet Protocols" by Reynolds and Postel is RFC1011 published MAY 87. It is available via anonymous FTP from SRI-NIC.ARPA as RFC:RFC1011.TXT. You may also want to get RFC:RFC-INDEX.TXT which is the list of all RFCs that have been published up to OCT 88. The latest in the list is RFC1073. Several of the RFCs supercede or update those listed in RFC1011.
