[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] What actually happens

efb@suned1.UUCP (Everett F. Batey II) (11/01/88)

Would appreciate if someone could briefly summarize the sequence of
outbound and inbound messages thru the interface to/fm ethernet for
ping, finger, ftp and telnet. Where ping or finger ( and the tables,
hosts, etc .. ) just know host.do.main or 123.34.45.67 ( internet ) is
ARP the solution on private ethernets to findout host.do.main's ether?

Some simplified enlightenment would be well apreciated here. I am trying
to troubleshoot an interface without knowing what to expect, event or time
wise. Thanks .. /Ev/
