[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] printers over TCP/IP

Is there a "standard" for driving printers with a TCP/IP connection?
We've just wrapped up a small board with a couple of serial ports,
a parallel port, an ethernet chip set, 512K of memory and a 15 Mhz
processor. We would like to use this to drive an HP-Laserjet (using
the parallel), and an Apple Laser printer.

Would a (single direction) telnet connection be appropriate?

Is there an RFC (or some such) that would be a good place to
start for this?
