rtm worked in research.  e.g., he ported bsd tcp/udp/ip to streams,
back when only eighth edition unix had streams.  i believe this was the
first example of a multiplexing stream handler.  it's a pretty neat hack.

rtm had access to the master source code as in master race, but did not
develop in system v at murray hill.
