On 14 November, I sent out a broadcast request for persons who had been hit by the November Internet Virus to contact the FBI via the eMaildrop we have set up on Beast.DDN.MIL. The response so far has been overwhelming! I delivered ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-EIGHT pages of hardcopy to the FBI last week. Everyone who filed a virus report will be contacted. (The Case Agent in charge of this investigation has set up a database of Points of Contact, sites hit, phone numbers, local FBI field offices, their phone numbers, etc.) If there is anyone left who believes that his/her site was penetrated by this virus and still hasn't eMailed in their report, please drop a message to INFO-VACC [at] Beast.DDN.MIL My original message asked for reports from computer sites owned by or run on the behalf of the U.S. Government (to pursue this case under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act of 1986). Now the FBI isn't being so fussy -- they are functioning as the central clearing house for this case and will pass onto appropriate local authorities any reports that the Justice Department can't act on. Translation: If your incident wasn't actionable under the 1986 Act, you may still have rights to legal redress under local laws -- and the FBI will help. And in case anyone missed last week's newsreport, a grand jury has been impaneled. So if you want to be heard, speak up now! /s/ Tom Zmudzinski DDN Network Security Officer (703) 285-5333
