[My, my, hey, hey!] I must admit that I attended Mr Young's concert at the Rocks with rather low expectations. After all, this is the person whose last two albums were such flops that his record company sued him. I really admire him for trying new things, such as far-out electronic and rockabilly, but I personally don't enjoy listening to it. To top it all off, his new album is all country, with Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings! His band is called the "International Harvesters." Last time I saw him, he had Crazy Horse... He started the show with the whole band on stage -- none of the initial solo acoustic stuff like the old days. The first song was a country song, and the audience was beginning to wonder. We were definately there for the old Neil Young. Then he launched into "Comes a time", which had everybody on their feet. Then another country song. With a few exceptions, they alternated between the new stuff and the old favorites all night. I really did not recognize any of the new songs; some of the old stuff included "Sugar Mountain", (he forgot the words halfway through), "Helpless", "Heart of Gold", "Old man", and an absolutely raging version of "Down by the River," although he really needs Crazy Horse to do that last one properly. As a whole, I found the show to be quite enjoyable -- Neil can still play guitar. jon -- Jonathan Corbet National Center for Atmospheric Research, Field Observing Facility {seismo|hplabs}!hao!boulder!jon (Thanks to CU CS department)

Young is one of the initial performers to be confirmed to appear at Farm Aid in Champaign Il. He booked at about the same time as Willie Nelson. Could he possibly plan to be ALL country (like most of the performers) at this gig? Has anyone heard? Does anyone know? Does anyone care?
