In-Reply-To: Your message of Wednesday, 21 December 1988 12:34:29 EST To: hastings@morgul.psc.edu Cc: jbilos@cc7.bbn.com There is a terrestrial link between the URoch (n15) and UWisc (n94) which will be operational during this period of time. The BSATS will also provide cross country connectivity. Probably not. Date: Thu, 22 Dec 88 19:44:43 -0500 From: Robert Pyle BBNCC 20/672 x3518 <rpyle@BBN.COM> Gene: There will still be a transcontinental terrestrial path with CMU down, from RCC5 to UROCH to WISC to SAC, etc. This is not to say that CMU's absence will go unnoticed! The path from DCEC through CMU to PURDU is just about the most heavily-used part of ARPANET, largely due to Internet traffic being forwarded via the EGP server gateway at PURDU. The week after Xmas is usually the low point of the year for traffic, and the new Butterfly mailbridges are starting to carry some of the MILNET-ARPANET traffic that has in the past been forwarded via PURDU, so I don't think there will be any crisis. Most of the transcontinental traffic already flows over the various satellite lines, anyway, so even if no terrestrial path remained, I doubt there would be a big change in quality of service (provided all the satellite lines don't go down at the same time!). I think Gene is wrong about the wideband net being the only link left (the MIT77<->SRI51 satellite link should still be operational), but he's right that things may get pretty grim next week. --Rob
