            Systems Manager for Computing Facilities
                     Systems Research Center
              University of Maryland, College Park.

Applications are  being sought  for  the   position  of   Systems
Manager in the Systems Research Center at the University of Mary-
land, College Park.

Facilities currently include: a Pyramid 90X, 3  Valid  VLSI  sta-
tions,  3  Sun workstations, 1 Iris graphics station, ..., Ether-
net, ...

This person will report directly to the Director of  the  Center.
His/her responsibilities will include: (i) Supervise all research
software developement and maintenance.   Carefully  evaluate  new
software  systems,  languages and packages for use in the Center.
Coordinate the work of a team  5  research  programmers/analysts,
responsible for software assistance to all faculty, graduate stu-
dents and laboratories of the Center.  Technically supervise  the
Center's  software library and Club.  (ii) Supervise operation of
all computer equipment of the Center.  Supervise the  work  of  a
team of technicians.  (iii) Direct the search for hardware selec-
tion and supervise hardware  acquisition.   Direct  planning  for
network planning and developement.

Candidates will at least hold an M.S. degree in Computer Science.
Preference  will be given to candidates holding a Ph.D. degree in
Computer Science or Software Engineering.  Additional engineering
education,  particularly  in the field of communications and con-
trols, is highly desirable.  Candidates should be  familiar  with
DEC,  CDC, Pyramid, Sun, Valid and IBM/PC machines, and some Lisp
type machine.  This include familiarity with the various  operat-
ing  systems.  In particular, thorough knowledge of 4.2bsd is re-
quired.   Extensive  experience  is  necessary  in  (i)  software
developement,  at  least in FORTRAN, PASCAL, LISP, MACSYMA and C;
(ii) supervision of research programmers;  (iii)  graphics,  CAD,
language  development,  and development of advanced software sys-
tems.

The yearly salary, depending on  qualifications  and  experience,
will  be at least forty thousand dollars, and could be as high as
the high fifties.
