[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] RJE over TCP/IP?

gfb@wsc-sun.UUCP (Gareth Beale) (02/10/89)

Migration to newer technology is often gradual, and you can't always get rid
of your favourite millstones. Assuming a batch processing machine with a
UNIX operating system, and remote hosts capable of running TCP/IP protocols,
does there exist an implementation of any kind of RJE support? I recently
noticed port #5 is reserved for RJE, and from that dug up RFC's 407 and 740.
However, these are very old (1972 and 1977 respectively), and it's not clear to
me what protocol was used. Telnet and FTP are mentioned, but there is talk of
ICP sockets (was ICP some predecessor of TCP?).

Any information will be gratefully received, but I was hoping to avoid any
discussion of the merits or otherwise of RJE type service. By the way, I
view RJE as the ability to send a job stream to a remote system and get the
output back, not any particular IBM-type definition of precisely what the
term means.

Since I am having some hiccoughs in my receipt of mail from this list, I would
appreciate direct responses as well as anything posted.

Thank you,
